Job Description

Electrum is an exciting B2B tech company working with some of South Africa’s biggest household names. We love that the projects we work on touch the lives of millions of South Africans every day, making a real difference whether that’s giving an aspiring businesswoman access to banking for the first time, or distributing government financial aid to thousands of students.

We hire the best of the best and we offer great opportunities for both personal growth and career progression. Best believe that in this role you will be joining a dynamic, highly skilled, results driven and delivery-focused team of developers.

Life at Electrum

A good work-life balance is very important at Electrum. You know when your brain has switched off for the day and you need to go for a surf, but you also know when the code you have written is sloppy. At Electrum you will be expected to know when you deserve a surf and when you need to knuckle down and get the work done. For the more knuckle down days we make it worth your while with benefits such as:

  • Company getaways
  • Onsite gym and shower facilities
  • Daily cooked lunches and a stocked kitchen for the mid-day nibbles
  • A rad coffee station where you can practice your cappuccino foam art
  • Team socialising, hikes, getaways, and dinners
  • Understanding that if an emergency comes up, family comes first
  • A generous leave policy, starting at 20 days per year
  • Flexible work hours
  • A recreational area with foosball, table tennis and fatsaks that are perfect for naps

We have created a safe, transparent environment where:

  • We know mistakes happen, and that’s okay. We even have a 3 step approach to dealing with them:
      1. Tell everyone about it
      2. Fix mistake
      3. Tell everyone about it
  • You are responsible for your actions both the successes and the failures
  • We talk openly about salaries and bonuses. At Electrum we believe it’s evident why some people earn more and others a bit less. It’s like being on a sports team where salaries are widely known.
A typical day on the job
  • Cruise to work (or perhaps wake up early for a hike with some coworkers)
  • Have some morning chats over some barista quality coffee
  • Check in with your team: help out by doing some coaching but also and get some mentorship
  • Meet with a customer to workshop their requirements
  • Write up some technical analysis to give to a junior developer to implement
  • Grab lunch and catch up with the rest of the company in the rec room
  • Squeeze in a game of table tennis
  • Write some amazing code
  • Grab another coffee
  • Test your code with a customers team
  • Maybe grab a drink with some team members after work
  • See your solution go live at the end of the day (and test it again when you go to the grocery store and purchase the product you helped enable at one of our customers

Requirements

  • 3 years experience in software development

Anyone can write code. However it takes a bit of experience to write code that balances elegance, maintainability, efficiency and quality.

  • Be strong with Java

Our backend systems are built on this. They are high performance systems that really require you to know what you’re doing in Java.

  • A university degree

Any degree really. We need your proven analytical skills here with the ability to work in high stakes (we’re working with other people’s money here!) and highly complex environments. The stuff we do has a material impact on the world and also therefore is high reward, but that also means it comes with high risk. You can’t always just learn it on the job. We need to know that you know what you’re doing.

Increase your odds

We’ll be growing you into someone that has the following skills which is why it’s beneficial to already have them:

  • Full stack experience
  • SaaS development experience
  • Payments experience

Benefits

  • Team beach getaways
  • World class payments training
  • Macbook Pro
  • Highly competitive games of table tennis
  • Showers and Towel Service
  • Generous leave policy
  • Tons of career growth opportunities
  • Family style cooked lunches
  • Great coffee
  • Friday beer on tap
  • Company gym
