Job Description

International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks applications from suitably qualified candidates for a short-term videography/photography assignment.

Background

As part of technical support to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DARRLD), IWMI will be coordinate a videography/photography assignment on irrigation in South Africa.

Objective of the consultancy

The overall objective of this consultancy is to produce short videos and high resolution photographs that can be used in various communication platforms and for general communication. This will involve travelling to remote locations to collect the necessary material, and sourcing from existing repositories. The main aim of the video is to inform people about irrigation in South Africa. DARRLD will use the video and photographs in presentations at conferences and other events to showcase and advertise irrigation in South Africa i.e. what the South African irrigation sector has to offer the world. While there is no target audience the videos should be interesting to professionals in irrigation and it should also be informative to farmers and the general public. The video should also draw from strategic objectives/priorities as indicated in the Irrigation Strategy for South Africa.

Methodology

The consultant selected for this assignment will perform the following indicative tasks:

  • Develop the video concept and storyboard to be discussed with the IWMI/DALRRD team
  • Present a workplan for the assigned work specifying travelling days
  • Travel to several provinces in South Africa to collect media material
  • Perform appropriate short interviews with the major partners, beneficiaries and stakeholders
  • Work on the desired products for this consultancy, including high resolution photographs and two short 10-mins videos and a 3 5 mins promotion video

Deliverables / Expected outputs

The consultant will produce a database with at least 20 high resolution photographs and two (2) short videos.

  • Short videos in HD
  • The video must highlight purpose and goal of the DALRRD, including interviews with local people, document impact on the history of irrigation in South Africa where it started and grown of the years; land resources and production; water resources; etc.
  • Video shooting and editing
  • Narration, translation and subtitles where necessary
  • Script development
  • Full usage rights for music (or music for which copyright has been granted)
  • One fully-produced clip of 10 minutes and a short promotional clip of 3-5 mins in length in 1080p (HD) resolution aimed at sharing with national audience including government institutions, local stakeholders, local communities as well as an international audience.

A detailed brief will be provided.

As the focus is on story-telling and documenting the landscape and people, IWMI is looking for a creative, insightful photographer / videographer to produce a strong portfolio.

  • Biophysical overview - Land: 123 million ha, 12% arable irrigation ( 14 million ha) 1,6 million ha irrigation; Climate: North and Western rainfall areas. Water Resources, Water availability in South Africa (Surface water, ground water, water availability of irrigation). Rainfall patterns (Northern and Western rainfall areas). Dams. Irrigation schemes; there are 49 big irrigation schemes, 8 079 km canals and 21 286 structures) and 315 small irrigation schemes in South Africa (Mayor ones are Vaalaarts, Loskop, Hartbees etc.).
